Et is served by the See also:Chicago See also:Great Western and the Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & St Paul See also:railways. Red Wing is the seat of the Lutheran Ladies' See also:Seminary (1894) and the Red Wing Theological Seminary (Lutheran, 1885), and in the vicinity is the State Training School for Boys and Girls, originally the Minnesota State Reform School. In the city are the See also:Carnegie-Lawther library, a Federal See also:building, a municipal See also:theatre, the T. B. See also:Sheldon Memorial Auditorium, in connexion with which is a School of See also:Music, a Y.M.C.A. building, a City See also:Hospital, St See also:John's Hospital (1902) and an old ladies' See also:home. Red Wing is an important See also:wheat See also:market and See also:shipping point. In 1695 Le Sueur built a See also:post on See also:Prairie See also:Island, in the Mississippi, about 8 m. above the site of Red Wing, for the purpose, according to See also:Charlevoix, of interposing a barrier between the warring Dakotas and Chippewas; and in 1727 Rene See also:Boucher built on the See also:shore of Lake Pepin a fort which, after various vicissitudes, was abandoned in 1753. An See also:Indian See also:village occupied the site of Red Wing probably for many years before the arrival of the first whites, two Swiss missionaries, See also:Samuel See also:Denton and See also:Daniel Gavin, who maintained a See also:mission here in 1837-46.

In 1848 another mission was established by the See also:

American See also:Board. Red Wing (named from an Indian See also:chief) was platted in 1853 and was chartered as a city in 1857.
