city of N.E. See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Tarragona, on the See also:Saragossa-Tarragona railway, 4 M. N. of Salou, its See also:port on the Mediterranean. Pop. (1900) 26,681. Reus consists of two parts, the old and the new, separated by the Calle Arrabal, which occupies the site of the old city See also:wall. The old See also:town centres in the Plaza del Mercado, from, which narrow and tortuous lanes radiate in various directions; the new one See also:dates from about the See also:middle of the 18th See also:century, and its streets are wide and straight. There is an active See also:trade in the agricultural products of the fertile region around the city. The See also:local See also:industries See also:developed considerably between 1875 and 1905, and the city has important See also:flour, See also:wine and See also:fruit export houses. There is a See also:model See also:farm belonging to the See also:municipality in the .suburbs. Reus has excellent See also:primary, normal and higher-grade See also:state See also:schools, many private schools, an See also:academy of See also:fine arts and a public library. The hospitals and foundling See also:refuge, the See also:institute and the town See also:hall are handsome See also:modern buildings.

The earliest records of Reus date from about the middle of the 13th century. Its modern prosperity is traced to about the See also:

year 1750, when a See also:colony of See also:English settled here and established a trade in woollens, See also:leather, wine and See also:spirits. The See also:principal incidents in its See also:political See also:history arose out of the occurrences of 1843 (see SPAIN, History), in connexion with which the town received the See also:title of city, and Generals Zurbano and See also:Prim were made See also:counts of Reus. The city was the See also:birth-See also:place of See also:General Prim (1814-1870) and of the painter Mariano See also:Fortuny (1839-1874).
