He was educated at a private school at Hemel Hempstead, and in his sixteenth See also:year apprenticed to a druggist and printer at See also:Dorking. He had See also:early shown See also:literary capacity, and when nineteen began to write for the Monthly See also:Magazine. A year later he became secretary to See also:Sir See also:Richard See also:Phillips, its proprietor, and permanently adopted literature as a profession. He was successively editor of the See also:Mirror of Literature, the See also:Harlequin, the Literary See also:World, and sub-editor of the Illustrated London See also:News. He was also founder' and first editor of Year-See also:Book of See also:Science and See also:Art. His published See also:works amounted to more than one See also:hundred and fifty volumes. In 1834 he was elected a See also:fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. He died in London on the 6th of See also:March 1875.
