WANDSWORTH , a See also:

south-western See also:metropolitan See also:borough of See also:London, See also:England, bounded N. by the See also:river See also:Thames and See also:Batter-See also:sea, and E. by See also:Lambeth, and extending S. and W. to the boundary of the See also:county of London. Pop. (1901) 232,034. The name, which occurs in Domesday, indicates the position of the See also:village on the river Wandle, a small tributary of the Thames. Wands-See also:worth is the largest in See also:area of the metropolitan boroughs, including the districts of Putney by the river, See also:part of Clapham in the See also:north-See also:east, See also:Streatham in the south-east, Balham and Upper and See also:Lower Tooting in the centre and south. These aremainly residential districts, and the borough is not thickly populated. Towards the See also:west, along the Upper See also:Richmond and See also:Kingston roads, there is considerable open See also:country, undulating and well wooded. It is to a See also:great extent preserved in the public grounds of Putney See also:Heath, which adjoins See also:Wimbledon See also:Common, outside the borough, on the north; and Richmond See also:Park and See also:Barnes Common, parts of which are in the borough. Other public grounds are parts of Wandsworth Common (193 acres) and Clapham Common, both extending into See also:Battersea, Tooting Bec (147 acres) and Streatham Common (66 acres), and Wands-worth Park bordering the Thames. The borough is connected with See also:Fulham across the Thames by Wandsworth and Putney See also:bridges. The See also:annual See also:Oxford and See also:Cambridge See also:boat-See also:race starts from above Putney See also:Bridge, See also:finishing at See also:Mortlake; and the See also:club-houses of the See also:principal See also:rowing clubs of London are situated on the Putney See also:shore. Putney Heath was formerly notorious as a resort of highwaymen and duellists.

The See also:parliamentary borough of Wandsworth returns one member, but the municipal borough also includes part of the Clapham See also:division of the parliamentary borough of Battersea and Clap-See also:ham, and part of the Wimbledon division of See also:Surrey. The borough See also:council consists of a See also:mayor, 10 aldermen and 6o councillors. Area, 9129.7 acres.
