AIRDRIE , a municipal and See also:

police See also:burgh of See also:Lanarkshire, See also:Scotland. Pop. (1901) 22,228. It is situated 11 in. E. of See also:Glasgow by the See also:North See also:British railway, and also communicates with Glasgow by the Monkland See also:Canal (which passes within 1 m. Of the See also:town), as well as by the Caledonian railway via See also:Coatbridge and Whifflet. The canal was constructed between I761 and 1790, and connects with the Forth and See also:Clyde Canal near See also:Mary-See also:hill. Airdrie was a See also:market town in 1695, but owes its prosperity to the See also:great See also:coal and See also:iron beds in its vicinity. Other See also:industries include iron and See also:brass foundries, See also:engineering, manufactures of woollens and calicoes,' See also:silk-See also:weaving, See also:paper-making, oil and fireclay. The public buildings comprise the town See also:hall, See also:county buildings, See also:mechanics' See also:institute, See also:academy, two See also:fever hospitals and See also:free library, the burgh having been the first town in Scotland to adopt the Free Library See also:Act. Airdrie unites with See also:Falkirk, See also:Hamilton, See also:Lanark and See also:Linlithgow in sending one member to See also:parliament. The See also:parish of New Monkland, in which Airdrie lies, was formed (with Old Monkland)in 1640 out of the See also:ancient See also:barony of Monkland, so named from the fact that it was See also:part of the lands granted by See also:Malcolm IV. to the monks of Newbattle.
