BRIDGET, BRIGITTA, BIIGITTA, OF See also:SWEDEN, See also:SAINT (c. 1302-1373) , the most celebrated saint of the See also:northern kingdoms, was the daughter of See also:Birger Persson, See also:governor and lagman (provincial See also:judge) of Uppland, and one of the richest landowners of the See also:country. In 1316 she was married to Ulf Gudmarson, See also:lord of Nericia,' to whom she See also:bore eight See also:children, one of whom wasafterwards honoured as St See also:Catherine of Sweden. Bridget's saintly and charitable See also:life soon made her known far and wide; she gained, too, See also:great religious See also:influence over her See also:husband, with whom (1341–1343) she went on See also:pilgrimage to St See also:James of Compostella. In 1344, shortly after their return, Ulf died in the Cistercian monastery of Alvastra in See also:East Gothland, and Bridget now devoted herself wholly to See also:religion. As a See also:child she had already believed herself to have visions; these now became more frequent, and her records of these " revelations," which were tanslated into Latin by See also:Matthias, See also:canon of See also:Linkoping; and by her See also:confessor, See also:Peter, See also:prior of Alvastra, obtained a great See also:vogue during the See also:middle ages. It was about this See also:time that she founded the See also:order of St Saviour, or See also:Bridgittines (q.v.), of which the See also:principal See also:house, at Vadstena, was richly endowed by See also:King See also:Magnus II. and his See also:queen. About 1350 she went to See also:Rome; partly to obtain from the See also:pope the authorization of the neW order, partly in pursuance of her self-imposed See also:mission to elevate the moral See also:tone of the See also:age. It was not till 1370 that Pope See also:Urban V. confirmed the See also:rule of her order; but meanwhile Bridget had made herself universally beloved in Rome by her kindness and See also:good See also:works. See also:Save for occasional pilgrimages, including one to See also:Jerusalem in 1373, she remained in Rome till her See also:death on the 23rd of See also:July 1373. She was canonized in r391 by Pope See also:Boniface IX., and her feast is celebrated on the 9th of See also:October.
