CALIXTUS III . (c. 1378-1458), See also:pope from 1455 to 1458, was a Spaniard named See also:Alphonso de See also:Borgia, or Borja. A native of Xativa, he gained a See also:great reputation as a jurist, becoming See also:professor at See also:Lerida; in 1429 he was made See also:bishop of See also:Valencia, and in 1444 a See also:cardinal, owing his promotion mainly to his See also:close friendship with Alphonso V., See also:king of See also:Aragon and See also:Sicily. Chosen pope in See also:April 1455, he was very anxious to organize a crusade against the See also:Turks, and having sold many of his possessions, succeeded in equipping a See also:fleet. Neither the princes nor the See also:people of See also:Europe, however, were enthusiastic in this cause, and very little result came from the pope's exertions. During his papacy Calixtus became involved in a See also:quarrel with his former friend, Alphonso of Aragon, now also king of See also:Naples, and after the king's See also:death in See also:June 1458 he refused to recognize his illegitimate son, See also:Ferdinand, as king of Naples, asserting that this See also:kingdom was a See also:fief of the See also:Holy See. This pope was notorious for nepotism, and was responsible for introducing his See also:nephew, Rodrigo Borgia, afterwards Pope See also:Alexander VI., to See also:Rome.
