When about twenty years of See also:age he spent a considerable See also:time in travelling, visiting See also:England in 1883. On the 22nd of May 1886 he married See also:Marie Amelie, daughter of Philippe, duc d'See also:Orleans, See also:comte de See also:Paris, and on the See also:death of his See also:father (,9th of See also:October 1889) he succeeded to the See also:throne of Portugal. In that See also:year the See also:British See also:government found it necessary to make formal remonstrances against Portuguese encroachments in See also:South See also:Africa, and relations between the two countries were greatly strained for some time. The king's attitude during this See also:critical See also:period was one of conciliation, and his temperate, though See also:firm, speech on opening the See also:Cortes in See also:January 1890 did much to strengthen the party of See also:peace. In 1900-1901 also his friendly attitude towards See also:Great See also:Britain was shown by cordial toasts at a banquet to the See also:officers of the British See also:fleet at See also:Lisbon. King Carlos distinguished himself as a See also:patron of See also:science and literature, and was himself an artist of some repute. In See also:March 1894 he took a very active See also:part in the celebration of the 5ooth anniversary of the See also:birth of See also:Prince See also:Henry the Navigator, and a year later he decorated the Portuguese poet, Joao de See also:Deus, with much See also:honour at Lisbon. He took a great See also:personal See also:interest in deep-See also:sea soundings and marine exploration, and published an See also:account of some of his own investigations, the results themselves being shown at an oceanographic See also:exhibition opened by him on the 12th of See also:April 1897. In May 1907 the king suspended the constitution of Portugal and temporarily appointed Senhor Franco as See also:dictator with a view to carrying out certain necessary reforms. Some discontent was aroused by this proceeding; this was increased by Franco's drastic See also:measures, and on the 1st of See also:February 1908 King Carlos and his See also:elder son, Louis, See also:duke of Braganza (1887-1908), were assassinated whilst See also:driving through the streets of Lisbon.

The king was succeeded by his only surviving son, See also:

Manuel, duke of See also:Beja (b. 1889), who took the See also:title of Manuel II. See S. M. El Rei D. Carlos I. e sua See also:obra artislica e scientific (Lisbon, 1908).
