city and the See also:county seat of See also:Lee county, See also:Illinois, U.S.A., on the See also:Rock See also:river, in the N.W. See also:part of the See also:state. Pop. (1890) 5161; (1900) 7917 (879 See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o) 7216. It is served by the See also:Chicago & See also:North-Western and the Illinois Central See also:railways, and is connected with See also:Sterling by an electric See also:line; See also:freight is shipped over the Hennepin See also:Canal. The city has two parks of 159 and 6 acres respectively, and there is a See also:Chautauqua See also:Park, where an See also:annual Chautauqua See also:Assembly is held. Dixon is the seat of the See also:Northern Illinois normal school (incorporated in 1884), and of the Rock River military See also:academy. The river furnishes See also:water See also:power for the See also:street railways, electric See also:lighting and a number of manufacturing establishments. Among the manufactures are condensed See also:milk, boxes, See also:wire screens and wire See also:cloth, See also:lawn mowers, See also:gas engines, See also:cement, agricultural implements, shoes and wagons. The See also:place was laid out in 1835 by See also:John Dixon (1784–1876), the first See also:white settler of Lee county. A See also:bronze tablet in the See also:Howells See also:Building, at the inter-See also:section of First and See also:Peoria Streets, marks the site of his See also:cabin, and in the city See also:cemetery a See also:granite See also:shaft has been erected to his memory. Dixon was chartered as a city in 1859.
