GLOSSOP , a See also:

market See also:town and municipal See also:borough, in the High See also:Peak. See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Derbyshire, See also:England, on the extreme See also:northern border of the See also:county; 13 M. E. by S. of See also:Manchester by the See also:Great Central railway. Pop. (19o1) 21,526. It is the See also:chief seat of the See also:cotton manufacture in Derbyshire, and it has also woollen and See also:paper See also:mills, dye and See also:print See also:works, and See also:bleaching greens. The town consists of three See also:main divisions, the Old Town (or Glossop proper), See also:Howard Town (or Glossop See also:Dale) and See also:Mill Town. An older See also:parish See also:church was replaced by that of All See also:Saints in 183o; there is also a very See also:fine See also:Roman See also:Catholic church. In the immediate neighbourhood is Glossop See also:Hall, the seat of See also:Lord Howard, lord of the See also:manor, a picturesque old See also:building with extensive terraced gardens. On a See also:hill near the town is Melandra See also:Castle, the site of a Roman fort guarding Longdendale and the way into the hills of the Peak See also:District. In the neighbourhood also a great railway viaduct spans the Dinting valley with sixteen See also:arches. To the See also:north, in Longdendale, there are five lakes belonging to the See also:water-See also:supply See also:system of Manchester, formed by damming the Etherow, a stream which descends from the high See also:moors north-See also:east of Glossop. The town is governed by a See also:mayor, 6 aldermen and 18 councillors.

Area, 3052 acres. Glossop was granted by See also:Henry I. to See also:William Peverel, on the See also:attainder of whose son it reverted to the See also:crown. In 1157 it was gifted by Henry II. to the See also:abbey of Basingwerk. Henry VIII. bestowed it on the See also:earl of See also:Shrewsbury. It was made a municipal borough in 1866.
