KILMALLOCK , a See also:

S.W. of See also:Dublin by the See also:Great See also:Southern & Western See also:main See also:line. Pop. (1901), 1206. It commands a natural route (now followed by the railway) through the hills to the See also:south and south-See also:west, and is a site of great See also:historical See also:interest. It received a See also:charter in the reign of See also:Edward III., at which See also:time it was walled and fortified, and entered by four See also:gates, two of which remain. It was a military See also:post of importance in See also:Elizabeth's reign, but its fortifications were for the most See also:part demolished by See also:order of See also:Cromwell. Two castellated mansions are still to be seen. The See also:church of St See also:Peter and St See also:Paul belonged to a former See also:abbey, and has a See also:tower at the See also:north-west corner which is a converted See also:round tower. The Dominican Abbey, of the 13th See also:century, has See also:Early See also:English remains of great beauty and a See also:tomb to See also:Edmund, the last of the See also:White Knights, a See also:branch of the See also:family of See also:Desmond intimately connected with Kilmallock, who received their See also:title from Edward III. at the See also:battle of Halidon See also:Hill. The See also:foundation of Kilmallock, however, is attributed to the Geraldines, who had several towns in this vicinity. Eight See also:miles from the town is Lough Gur, near which are numerous See also:stone circles and other remains.
