He began his studies under See also:Professor Gardelle and See also:Petitot, whose enamels and miniatures he copied with considerable skill. He went to See also:Paris in 1725, studying under J. B. Masse and F. le Moyne, on whose recommendation he was taken to See also:Naples by the See also:Marquis Puysieux. In 1735 he was in See also:Rome, See also:painting the portraits of See also:Pope See also:Clement XII. and several cardinals. 'Three years later he accompanied See also:Lord Duncannon to See also:Constantinople, whence he went to See also:Vienna in 1742 to paint the portraits of the imperial See also:family. His See also:eccentric See also:adoption of See also:oriental See also:costume secured him the See also:nickname of " the See also:Turkish painter." Stil under distinguished patronage he returned to Paris 1744 visited :'::gland, where he painted the princess of See also:Wales in 1753, See also:ant, went to See also:Holland in 1756, where, in the following See also:year, he married See also:Marie Fargues. Another visit to See also:England followed in 1772, and in the next two years his name figures among the Royal See also:Academy exhibitors. He returned to his native See also:town in 1776 and died at Geneva in 1789. Liotard was an artist of See also:great versatility, and though his fame depends largely on his graceful and delicate See also:pastel drawings, of which " La Liseuse," the " See also:Chocolate Girl," and " La Belle Lyonnaise " at the See also:Dresden See also:Gallery are delightful examples, he achieved distinction by his enamels, copperplate engravings and See also:glass painting. He also wrote a See also:Treatise on the See also:Art of Painting, and was an See also:expert See also:collector of paintings by the old masters.

Many of the masterpieces he had acquired were sold by him at high prices on his second visit to England. The museums of See also:

Amsterdam, Berne, and Geneva are particularly See also:rich in examples of his paintings and pastel drawings. A picture of a Turk seated is at the See also:Victoria and See also:Albert Museum, while the See also:British Museum owns two of his drawings. The Louvre has, besides twenty-twodrawings, a portrait of See also:General See also:Herault and a portrait of the artist is to be found at the See also:Sala dei pittori, in the Uffizi Gallery, See also:Florence.
