MAGLIANI, See also:AGOSTINO (1824-1891) , See also:Italian financier, was a native of Lanzino, near See also:Salerno. He studied at See also:Naples, and a See also:book on the See also:philosophy of See also:law based on Liberal principles won for him a See also:post in the Neapolitan See also:treasury. He entered the Italian See also:Senate in 1871, and had already secured a reputation as a See also:financial See also:expert before his Questione monetaria appeared in 1874. In See also:December 1877 he became See also:minister of See also:finance in the reconstructed See also:Depretis See also:ministry, and he subsequently held the same See also:office in three other Liberal cabinets. In his second See also:tenure he carried through (188o) the abolition of the grist tax, to take effect in 1884. Having to See also:face an increased See also:expenditure without offending the See also:Radical electorate by unpopular taxes, he hadrecourse to unsound methods of finance, which seriously embarrassed Italian See also:credit for some years after he finally laid down office in 1888. He died in See also:Rome on the 22nd of See also:February 1891. He was one of the founders of the See also:anti-socialistic " See also:Adam See also:Smith Society " at See also:Florence.
