MISSOULA , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of Missoula county, See also:Montana, U.S.A., on the See also:Clark See also:Fork of the See also:Columbia (here called the Missoula See also:river), about 125 M. W.N.W. of See also:Helena. Pop. (1900), 4366 (1020 See also:foreign-See also:born) ; (Ig1o), 12,869. It is served by the See also:Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & See also:Puget See also:Sound railway, and by the See also:Northern Pacific railway, which has shops here and of which Missoula is a See also:division headquarters. There is an electric railway from Missoula to See also:Hamilton, about 48 m. See also:south. The Northern Pacific railway maintains a large See also:hospital here, and St See also:Patrick's hospital is maintained by sisters of charity. Missoula is about 3200 ft. above See also:sea-level, with See also:Mount Jumbo immediately See also:north, and University See also:Mountain immediately south of the Clark Fork, and the See also:Bitter See also:Root range to the See also:west. The city is situated on the See also:bed of a prehistoric See also:lake. Missoula is the seat of the Sacred See also:Heart See also:academy (for girls), of a See also:Christian See also:Brothers' school (for boys), of the See also:Garden City commercial See also:college, and of the See also:state university (founded in 1893, and opened in 1895), which occupies a campus of 40 acres. Missoula has considerable See also:trade with the surrounding See also:country in farming, See also:fruit-growing, lumbering and See also:mining.

The Clark Fork furnishes See also:

water See also:power, and at See also:Bonner, 6 m. See also:east, is the Clark See also:dam (28 ft.), which furnishes electric power. Missoula was founded in 1864, and chartered as a city in 1887.
