POLISH See also:SUCCESSION See also:WAR (1733-1735) , the name given to a war which arose out of the competition for the See also:throne of See also:Poland between the elector See also:August of See also:Saxony, son of August II. (the Strong), and See also:Stanislaus Leszcynski, the See also:king of Poland installed See also:thirty years before by See also:Charles XII. of See also:Sweden and displaced by August the Strong when Charles's projects collapsed. The claims of Stanislaus were supported by See also:France, See also:Spain and See also:Sardinia, those of the Saxon See also:prince by See also:Russia and the See also:empire, the See also:local See also:quarrel being made the pretext for the See also:settlement of See also:minor outstanding claims of the See also:great See also:powers amongst themselves. The war was therefore a typical 18th See also:century " war with a limited See also:object," in which no one but the cabinets and the professional armies were concerned. It was fought on two theatres, the See also:Rhine and See also:Italy. The Rhine See also:campaigns were entirely unimportant, and are remembered only for the last See also:appearance in the See also:field of Prince See also:Eugene and See also:Marshal See also:Berwick—the latter was killed at the See also:siege of See also:Philippsburg—and the See also:baptism of See also:fire of the See also:young See also:crown prince of See also:Prussia, afterwards See also:Frederick the Great. In Italy, however, there were three hard-fought—though indecisive—battles, See also:Parma (See also:June 29, 1734), Luzzara (See also:Sept. 19, 1734) and See also:Bitonto (May 25, 1735), the first and last won by the Austrians, the second by the See also:French and their See also:allies. In Poland itself, Stanislaus, elected king in See also:September 1733, was soon expelled by a See also:Russian See also:army and was afterwards besieged in See also:Danzig by the Russians and See also:Saxons (Feb.–June 1733).
