E. of See also:Liverpool by the See also:London & See also:North Western railway. Pop. (1901), 7855. It is of considerable antiquity, and received a See also:grant for a market and See also:fair in the 7th See also:year of See also:Edward III. A See also:church existed in the 13th See also:century. The See also:present church of St See also:Mary is in various styles, with a lofty See also:tower and See also:spire and carved See also:timber roof. The See also:chief See also:industry is the making of watches, and the town has See also:long been celebrated for the See also:production of See also:watch movements and tools. The industry was first introduced in 1730 by See also:John See also:Miller from See also:Yorkshire. There is also a manufacture of electric cables. John See also:Philip See also:Kemble, the actor, was See also:born at Prescot in 1757. To the north of the town is Knowsley See also:Park, the See also:demesne of the earls of See also:Derby, with a See also:mansion of various See also:dates from the 15th century onward, containing a See also:fine collection of pictures.

Prescot was formerly of greater importance in relation to the now populous district of See also:

south-See also:west Lancashire; it was also a postal centre, and it is curious to See also:notice that such addresses as " Liverpool, near Prescot " were necessary.
