See also:ROLLAND, See also:JOHN (fl. 1560) , Scottish poet, appears to have been a See also:priest of the See also:diocese of See also:Glasgow, and to have been known in See also:Dalkeith in 1555. He is the author of two poems, the See also:Court of See also:Venus and a See also:translation of the Seven Sages. The former, which was printed by John See also:Ros in i 575, may have been written before 156o. The latter was translated from a Scots See also:prose version at the See also:suggestion of an aunt (" ane proper wenche "), who had found his treatment of the courtly See also:allegory involved and uninteresting.
The Court of Venus was edited by See also:Walter Gregor for the S.T.S. in 1884. See W. A. See also:Craigie's See also:long See also:list of corrections of that edition in the See also:Modern See also:Language Quarterly (See also:March 1898). The Seven Sages was printed in 1578, and frequently during the earlier decades of the 17th See also:century. It was reprinted by See also:David See also:Laing for the See also:Bannatyne See also:Club (1837). See also:Sibbald, in his See also:Chronicle of Scottish See also:Poetry (iii. 287), hinted that Rolland may be the author of the Thrie Priestis of Peblis. There is not a scrap of See also:evidence in support of this; and there are many strong reasons against the ascription.
