He became an See also:Edinburgh See also:merchant and was admitted a See also:burgess in 1587. Some years earlier, in 1568, when the " pest " raged in the See also:capital, he retired to his native See also:county and amused himself by See also:writing out copies of poems by 15th and See also:early 16th See also:century Scots poets. His See also:work extended to eight See also:hundred See also:folio pages, divided into five parts. The MS. descended to his only daughter See also:Janet, and later to her See also:husband's See also:family, the Foulises of Woodhall and Ravelston, near Edinburgh. From them it passed to the See also:Advocates' library, where it is still preserved. This MS., known as the " Bannatyne See also:Manuscript," constitutes with the " Asloan " and " See also:Maitland Folio " See also:MSS. the See also:chief repository of See also:Middle Scots See also:poetry, especially for the texts of the greater poets See also:Henryson, See also:Dunbar, See also:Lyndsay and See also:Alexander See also:Scott. Portions of it were reprinted (with modifications) by See also:Allan See also:Ramsay in his Ever See also:Green (1724), and later, and more correctly, by See also:Lord See also:Hailes in his See also:Ancient Scottish Poems (r 770). The entire See also:text was issued by the Hunterian See also:Club (1873—1902) in a handsome and generally accurate See also:form. The name of Bannatyne was honoured in 1823 by the See also:foundation in Edinburgh of the Bannatyne Club, devoted to the publication of See also:historical and See also:literary material from Scottish See also:sources. The See also:thirty-third issue of the club (1829) was Memorials of George Bannatyne (1545—1608), with a memoir by See also:Sir See also:Walter Scott and an See also:account of the MS. by See also:David See also:Laing.
