STEPHANUS BYZANTINUS (See also:

STEPHEN OF See also:BYZANTIUM) , the author of a See also:geographical See also:dictionary entitled 'Matta, of which, apart from some fragments, we possess only the meagre See also:epitome of one Hermolaus. This See also:work was first edited under the See also:title IIepi lrohecov (Aldus, See also:Venice, 1502); the best See also:modern See also:editions are by W. See also:Dindorf and others (4 vols., See also:Leipzig, 1825), A. Westermann (Leipzig, 1839), and A. See also:Meineke (vol. i., See also:Berlin, 1849). Hermolaus dedicates his epitome to Justinian; whether the first or second See also:emperor of that name is meant is disputed, but it seems probable that Stephanus flourished in the earlier See also:part of the 6th See also:century, under Justinian I. The See also:chief fragments remaining of the See also:original work (which certainly contained lengthy quotations from classical authors and many interesting topographical and See also:historical details) are preserved by See also:Constantine Porphyrogennetos, De administrando imperils, ch. 23 (the See also:article 'Ianpiat &o) and De thematibus, ii. to (an See also:account of See also:Sicily); the latter includes a passage from the comic poet See also:Alexis on the Seven Largest Islands. Another respectable fragment, from the article Abun to the end of A, exists in a MS. of the Seguerian library. See the editions of Westermann, Dindorf and Meineke, above noticed; the article " Stephanus Byzant.," in See also:Smith's Dictionary o See also:Ancient See also:Biography, vol. iii.; E. H.
