He was a See also:pupil of See also:Benjamin See also:Wyon, medallist and See also:seal-engraver, and made his journalistic debut by a See also:series of papers in the Evening See also:Star in 1866, printed separately in the next See also:year as Mr Sprouts, His Opinions. He became See also:leader-writer and correspondent on the See also:Morning Star, and was subsequently on the See also:staff of the See also:Manchester See also:Guardian, the New See also:York See also:World, and for many years the Daily See also:News, resigning from the last-named See also:paper in 1899. His novel The See also:Democracy (3 vols., 1876) was published under the See also:pseudonym of See also:Whyte See also:Thorne. His remarkable See also:story The See also:Island (1888) attracted little See also:attention until, years afterwards, its successor, No. 5 See also:John See also:Street (1899), made him famous; the earlier novel was then republished. Later See also:works were The Yellow See also:Van (1903), See also:Ring in the New (1906), All Moonshine (1907).
