He was the son of See also:Jean Victor Besenval, See also:colonel of the See also:regiment of Swiss See also:guards in the pay of See also:France, who was charged in 1707 by See also:Louis XIV. with a See also:mission to See also:Sweden, to reconcile See also:Charles XII. with the See also:tsar See also:Peter the See also:Great, and to unite them in See also:alliance with France against See also:England. Pierre Victor served at first as aide-de-See also:camp to See also:Marshal See also:Broglie during the See also:campaign of 1748 in Bohemia, then as aide-de-camp to the See also:duke of See also:Orleans during the Seven Years' See also:War. He then became See also:commander of the Swiss Guards. When the Revolution began Besenval remained firmly attached to the See also:court, and he was given command of the troops which the See also:king had concentrated on See also:Paris in See also:July 1789 —a See also:movement which led to the taking of the See also:Bastille on the 14th of July. Besenval showed incompetence in the crisis, See also:ant. attempted to flee. He was arrested, tried by the tribunal of the See also:Chatelet, but acquitted. He then See also:fell into obscurity and died in Paris in 1794 Besenval de Bronstatt is principally known as the author of Memoires, which were published in 1805-1807 by the vicomte T. A. de See also:Segur, in which are reported many scandalous tales, true or false, of the court of Louis XVI. and See also:Marie Antoinette. The authenticity of these See also:memoirs is not absolutely established.
