He was See also:nephew and namesake of Cardinal Pierre Bertrand of See also:Annonay. After a careful juristic See also:education he was successively See also:advocate at the See also:parlement of See also:Paris, See also:intendant of the See also:council of the See also:count of See also:Nevers (1321), and counsellor-clerk to the parlement (1329). Having taken See also:holy orders, he became See also:dean of St Quentin in 1330, and was employed to negotiate the See also:marriage of the See also:duke of See also:Normandy, the future See also:king See also:John the See also:Good of See also:France, with the daughter of the king of Bohemia. In 1335 he became See also:bishop of Nevers, in 1339 of See also:Arras, and contributed to bring the See also:county of See also:Flanders into the See also:kingdom of France. Created cardinal See also:priest of St Susanna in 1344, he was employed by the See also:pope on important See also:missions, notably to negotiate See also:peace or an See also:armistice between France and See also:England. Having become bishop of See also:Ostia in 1353, he was sent next See also:year to See also:Charles IV. of See also:Germany, and induced him to come to See also:Italy to be crowned See also:emperor at See also:Rome, 1355. In 1356 he went to France to try to arrange a peace with England, and died in 1361 at the priory of Montaud near See also:Avignon. See A.
