He was educated at See also:Glasgow University, where, at the See also:age of twenty, he acted for a See also:short See also:time as substitute for the See also:professor of See also:Greek. In 1784 he completed his See also:History of See also:Ancient See also:Greece, its Colonies and Conquests (published 1786). This See also:work, valuable at a time when the study of Greek history was in its See also:infancy, and translated into See also:French and See also:German, was written from a strong Whig See also:bias, and is now entirely superseded (see GREECE: Ancient History," Authorities "). On the See also:death of See also:William See also:Robertson (1721-1793), Gillies was appointed historiographer-royal for See also:Scotland. In his old age he retired to Clapham, where he died on the 15th of See also:February 1836. Of his other See also:works, none of which are much read, the See also:principal are: View of the Reign of See also:Frederic H. of See also:Prussia, with a Parallel between that See also:Prince and See also:Philip H. of Macedon (1789), rather a See also:panegyric than a See also:critical history; See also:translations of See also:Aristotle's See also:Rhetoric (1823) and See also:Ethics and Politics (1786—1797); of the Orations of See also:Lysias and Isocrates (1778) ; and History of the See also:World from See also:Alexander to See also:Augustus (1807), which, although deficient in See also:style, was commended for its learning and See also:research.
