For a See also:time also Hauptmann was employed as an architect, but all other - pursuits gave See also:place to music, and a See also:grand tragic See also:opera, See also:Mat{zilde, belongs to the See also:period just referred to. In 1822 he entered the See also:orchestra of See also:Cassel, again under Spohr's direction, and it was then that he first taught See also:composition and musical theory•to such men and his first lectures, dealing with such diverse subjects as See also:Catullus and the See also:Nibelungenlied, indicated the twofold direction of his labours. A new See also:chair of German See also:language and literature being founded for his benefit, he became See also:professor extraordinarius (1841) and then professor ordinarius (1843); and in 1842 he married See also:Louise See also:Hermann, the daughter of his See also:master and See also:col-See also:league. But the peaceful and prosperous course opening out before him at the university of See also:Leipzig was brought to a sudden See also:close. Having taken See also:part in 1849 with See also:Otto See also:Jahn and Theodor See also:Mommsen in a See also:political agitation for the See also:maintenance of the imperial constitution, See also:Haupt was deprived of his professorship by a See also:decree of the 22nd of See also:April 1851. Two years later, however, he was called to succeed See also:Lachmann at the university of See also:Berlin; and at the same time the Berlin See also:academy, which had made him as See also:Ferdinand See also:David, Burgmuller, See also:Kiel and others. His See also:corn-a corresponding member in 1841, elected him an See also:ordinary positions at this time chiefly consisted of motets, masses, can-member. For twenty-one years he continued to hold a prominent tatas and songs. His opera 'Valhi/de was performed at Cassel theque de l'Ecole See also:des See also:Charles, and the See also:Journal des savants. From the time of his See also:appointment to the Bibliotheque, Nationale up to the last days of his See also:life he was engaged in 'making abstracts of all the See also:medieval Latin writings (many See also:anonymous or of doubtful attribution) See also:relating to See also:philosophy, See also:theology, See also:grammar, See also:canon See also:law, and See also:poetry, carefully noting on See also:cards the first words of each passage. After his See also:death this See also:index of incipits, arranged alphabetically, was presented to the See also:Academic des See also:Inscriptions, and a copy was placed in the MS.
