HUNTSVILLE , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Madison county, See also:Alabama, U.S.A., situated on a See also:plain 10 m. N. of the See also:Tennessee See also:river, 18 m. from the See also:northern boundary of the See also:state, at an See also:altitude of about 617 ft. Pop. (1900) 8o68, of whom 3909 were of See also:negro descent; (1910 See also:census) 7611. There is a considerable suburban See also:population. Huntsville is served by the See also:Southern and the See also:Nashville, See also:Chattanooga & St See also:Louis See also:railways. The public square is on a high See also:bluff (about 750 ft. above See also:sea-level), at the See also:base of which a large See also:spring furnishes the city with See also:water, and also forms a stream once used for floating boats, loaded with See also:cotton, to the Tennessee river. The surrounding See also:country has See also:rich deposits of See also:iron, See also:coal and See also:marble, and cotton, See also:Indian See also:corn and See also:fruit are grown and shipped from Huntsville. Natural See also:gas is found in the vicinity. The See also:principal See also:industry is the manufacture of cotton. The value of the city's factory products increased from $692,340 in 1900 to $1,758,718 in 1905, or 154%. At Normal, about 31 m.

N.E. of Huntsville, is the State Agri-cultural and See also:

Mechanical See also:College for Negroes. Huntsville was founded in 1805 by See also:John See also:Hunt, a Virginian and a soldier in the See also:War of See also:Independence; in 1809 its name was changed to See also:Twickenham, in memory of the See also:home of the poet See also:Alexander See also:Pope, some of whose relatives were among the first settlers; but in 1811 the earlier name was restored, under which the See also:town was incorporated by the Territorial See also:Government, the first Alabama See also:settlement to receive a See also:charter. Huntsville was chartered as a city in 1844. Here, in 1819, met the See also:convention that framed the first state constitution, and in 1820 the first state legislature. On the 11th of See also:April 1862 Huntsville was seized by Federal troops, who were forced to retire in the following See also:September, but secured permanent See also:possession in See also:July 1863.
