The city is charmingly situated on the See also:shore of Lake Charles, and on the Calcasieu See also:river, which with some dredging can be made navigable for large vessels for 132 M. from the Gulf. It is a See also:winter resort. Among the See also:principal buildings are a See also:Carnegie library, the city See also:hall, the See also:Government See also:building, the See also:court See also:house, St See also:Patrick's See also:sanatorium, the masonic See also:temple and the Elks' See also:club. Lake Charles is in the See also:prairie region of southern Louisiana, to the N. of which, covering a large See also:part of the See also:state, are magnificent forests of See also:long-See also:leaf See also:pine, and lesser See also:lowland-LAKE See also:DISTRICT growths of See also:oak, ash, See also:magnolia, See also:cypress and other valuable See also:timber. The Watkins railway extending to the N.E. and the Kansas City Southern extending to the N.W. have opened up the very best of the See also:forest. The See also:country to the S. and W. is largely given over to See also:rice culture. Lake Charles is the See also:chief centre of See also:lumber manufacture in the state, and has rice See also:mills, See also:car shops and an important See also:trade in See also:wool.

miles W. are See also:sulphur mines (product in 1907 about 362,000 tons), which with those of See also:Sicily produce a large part of the See also:total product of the See also:world. Jennings, about 34 M. to the E., is the centre of oil See also:fields, once very productive but now of diminishing importance. Welsh, 23 M. E., is the centre of a newer See also:field; and others See also:lie to the N. Lake Charles was settled about 1852, largely by See also:people from See also:Iowa and neighbouring states, was incorporated as a See also:town in 1857 under the name of See also:Charleston and again in x867 under its See also:present name, and was chartered as a city in 1886. The city suffered severely by See also:fire in See also:April 1910.
