His See also:father's name was Bubb, but the son took the name of Doddington on inheriting a large See also:property by the See also:death of an See also:uncle of that name (1720). He was educated at See also:Oxford. In 1715 he was returned to See also:parliament as member for See also:Winchelsea, and was sent as See also:envoy extraordinary to See also:Spain. He carried on a scandalous See also:traffic in the five or six See also:parliamentary votes which he controlled, his tergiversation and venality furnishing See also:food for the See also:political satirists and caricaturists of the See also:day. His most estimable political See also:action was his See also:defence of See also:Admiral Byng in the See also:House of See also:Commons (1757). From 1722 to 1754 he sat in parliament for See also:Bridge-See also:water; from 1724 to 1740 was a See also:lord of the See also:treasury; and, in 1744, became treasurer of the See also:navy under See also:Henry See also:Pelham, and, again in 1755, under See also:Newcastle and See also:Fox. In See also:April 1761 he was raised to the See also:peerage as Baron Melcombe of Melcombe Regis in See also:Dorsetshire. He died at La Trappe, his See also:Hammersmith house, on the 28th of See also:July 1762. His wife, acknowledged only after the death of another See also:lady to whom he had given a See also:bond that he would marry no one else, died without issue. He was a wit and a friend of wits, a See also:good See also:scholar, and something of a See also:Maecenas; See also:Thomson's " Summer " was dedicated to him, See also:Fielding addressed to him an See also:epistle and See also:Edward See also:Young a See also:satire. He was a leading spirit of the Elell-See also:fire " See also:Club, whose members, called " See also:Franciscans," from their founder See also:Sir See also:Francis Dashwood (d.
