OLDHAM, See also:THOMAS (1816–1878) See also:British geologist, was See also:born in See also:Dublin on the 4th of May 1816. He was educated there at Trinity See also:College, graduating B.A. in 1836, and afterwards studied See also:engineering in See also:Edinburgh, where he gained a See also:good knowledge of See also:geology and See also:mineralogy under See also:Jameson. On his return to See also:Ireland in 1839 he became See also:chief assistant to See also:Captain (afterwards See also:Major See also:General) See also:Portlock, who conducted the See also:geological See also:department of the See also:Ordnance Survey, and he rendered much help in the See also:field and See also:office in the preparation of the See also:Report on the Geology of See also:Londonderry, &c. (1843). Subsequently he served under Captain (afterwards See also:Sir See also:Henry) See also:James, the first See also:local director of the Geological Survey of Ireland, whom he succeeded in 1846. Meanwhile in 1845 he was appointed See also:professor of Geology in the university of Dublin. In 1848 he was elected F.R.S. In 1849 he discovered in the See also:Cambrian rocks of See also:Bray See also:Head the problematical fossil named Oldhamia. In 185o he was selected to take See also:charge of the Geological Survey of See also:India, which he organized, and in due course he established the See also:Memoirs, the Palaeontologia Indica and the Records, to which he contributed many important articles. In 1864 he published an elaborate report On the See also:Coal Resources of India. He retired in 1876, and died at See also:Rugby on the 17th of See also:July 1878.
