Walker in 1792 and 1793, he See also:felt that his true See also:province See also:lay in that See also:science. He went in 1800 to See also:Freiberg to study for nearly two years under See also:Werner, and spent two more in See also:continental travel. In 1804 he succeeded Dr Walker as regius See also:professor of natural history in See also:Edinburgh university, and became perhaps the first eminent exponent in See also:Great See also:Britain of the Wernerian See also:geological See also:system; but when he found that theory untenable, he frankly announced his See also:conversion to the views of See also:Hutton. As a teacher, Jameson was remark-able for his See also:power of imparting See also:enthusiasm to his students, and from his class-See also:room there radiated an See also:influence which gave a marked impetus to the study of See also:geology in Britain. His See also:energy also, by means of See also:government aid, private donation and See also:personal outlay, amassed a great See also:part of the splendid collection which nc w occupies the natural history See also:department of the Royal Scottish Museum in Edinburgh. In 1819 Jameson, with See also:Sir See also:David See also:Brewster, started the Edinburgh Philosophical See also:Journal, which after the tenth See also:volume remained under his See also:sole conduct till his See also:death, which took See also:place in Edinburgh on the ,9th of See also:April 1854.
