RUSTOW, See also:FRIEDRICH WILHELM (1821-1878) , Swiss soldier and military writer, was a Prussian by See also:birth. He entered the service of his native See also:country, and served for some years, until the publication of Der Deutsche Militdrstaat vor isnd wdhrend der Revolution (See also:Zurich, 185o) brought him See also:official condemnation. He was sentenced by a See also:court-See also:martial to a See also:long 'See also:term of fortress imprisonment, but succeeded in escaping to See also:Switzerland. He obtained military employment in the service of the See also:Republic, and in 1857 was' See also:major on the engineer See also:staff. Three years later he accompanied See also:Garibaldi in the famous expedition against the two Sicilies as See also:colonel and See also:chief of the staff, and to him must be ascribed the victories of See also:Capua (19th See also:Sept. 186o) and the See also:Volturno (1st Oct. x86o). At the end of the See also:campaign he once more settled down at Zurich. At the out-break of the See also:war of 187o he offered' his services to See also:Prussia, but was not accepted. In 1878, on the See also:foundation of a military professorship at Zurich, Rustow applied for the See also:post, and, on its being given to another officer, lost See also:heart and committed See also:suicide. Two younger See also:brothers, both Prussian soldiers, were also distinguished men. The See also:elder, See also:ALEXANDER (1824-1866), is remembered for his See also:work Der Kustenkrieg "(See also:Berlin, 1848); the younger, See also:CAESAR (1826-1866), was one of the foremost experts of his See also:time in the See also:design and construction of military rifles, and the writer of several See also:treatises on that subject, of which we may mention See also:Die Kriegshandfeuerwaffen (Berlin, 1857-64). Both Alexander and Caesar See also:fell on the See also:field of See also:battle in the war of 1866, at See also:Koniggratz and Dermbach respectively.
