SHERIFFMUIR , a battlefield situated on the See also:

verge of the extreme See also:north-western flank of the Ochils, See also:Perthshire, See also:Scotland, watered by Wharry See also:Burn, an affluent of the See also:Allan. It lies within the See also:bounds of the See also:parish of See also:Dunblane, 21 M. E. by N. of the See also:town. It was the site of an indecisive See also:battle (13th of See also:November 1715) between the See also:Jacobites, about 12,000 strong, under See also:John See also:Erskine, 6th or 11th See also:earl of See also:Mar, and 4000 Royalists under See also:Archibald See also:Campbell, afterwards 3rd See also:duke of See also:Argyll. Both sides, each of which lost 500 men, claimed the victory, although in point of fact Mar deemed it prudent to See also:retreat. The " battle See also:stone " enclosed by a railing marks the See also:scene of the encounter.
