STEELE, See also:WILLIAM (d. 1680) , See also:lord See also:chancellor of See also:Ireland, was a son of See also:Richard Steele of See also:Sandbach, See also:Cheshire, and was educated at See also:Caius See also:College, See also:Cambridge. In 1648 he was chosen See also:recorder of See also:London, and he was one of the four counsel appointed to conduct the See also:case against See also:Charles I. in See also:January 1649, but illness prevented him from discharging this See also:duty. However, a few days later he took See also:part in the See also:prosecution of the See also:duke of See also:Hamilton and other Royalists. Steele was M.P. for the See also:City of London in 1654, was See also:chief See also:baron of the See also:exchequer in 1655, and was made lord chancellor of Ireland in 1656. After the fall of Richard See also:Cromwell he was one of the five commissioners appointed in 16J9 to govern Ireland. At the end of this See also:year he returned' to See also:England, but he refused to sit on the See also:committee of safety to which he had been named. At the Restoration he obtained the full benefits of the See also:Act of See also:Indemnity, but he thought it advisable to reside for a See also:time in See also:Holland.
