TOTTENVILLE , a former See also:village of See also:Richmond See also:county, New See also:York, U.S.A., and since 1898 a See also:part of New York See also:City. It is on the See also:southern See also:shore of Staten See also:Island in New York See also:Bay and on Staten Island See also:Sound, about 20 m. S.W. of the See also:south extremity of Manhattan Island, and is the See also:terminus of the Staten Island Rapid Transit railway. Marine engines, terra-See also:cotta and boats are manufactured here, and there are See also:oyster See also:fisheries. This house, originally called the " See also:Manor of See also:Bentley," was built by See also:Captain See also:Christopher Billopp (1638—1726), who sailed from See also:England in an armed See also:vessel, the " Bentley," in 1667, and, by circumnavigating Staten Island in 24 See also:hours, made it, under the ruling of the See also:duke of York, a part of New York. From the duke of York he received 1163 acres of See also:land, including the See also:present site of Tottenville. The village was See also:long known as Bentley, but in 1869 was incorporated (under a faulty See also:charter, revised in 1894) as Tottenville, apparently in See also:honour of See also:- GILBERT
