BALLYCASTLE , a seaport and watering-See also:

place on the See also:north See also:coast of Co. See also:Antrim, See also:Ireland, in the north See also:parliamentary See also:division, situated on a See also:bay of the same name opposite Rathlin See also:Island. Pop. (1901) 1481. It is connected with the See also:Northern Counties (Midland) railway at See also:Ballymoney by the Ballycastle See also:light railway. The See also:town consists of two divisions, about a See also:quarter of a mile apart and connected by a See also:fine See also:avenue. Towards the See also:close of the 18th See also:century Mr See also:Hugh See also:Boyd, obtaining the See also:estate, devoted himself to the See also:extension and improvement of the town, establishing manufactures, endowing charities and See also:building churches; and succeeded in producing a temporary vitality. Upwards of £150,000, including a large See also:government See also:grant, is said to have been expended upon the See also:pier and See also:harbour; but the violence of the See also:sea overthrew the one and the other became filled with See also:sand. To the See also:east of the town are the remains of Bonamargy See also:Abbey, the See also:burial-place of many of the Mac-Donnell See also:family. The See also:Carey See also:brook, by the See also:side of which the abbey stands, was formerly called the Margy, and on its See also:waters according to tradition dwelt the four See also:children of Lir, changed to swans by their step-See also:mother until St See also:Columba released them from enchantment.
