CHARLES VIII . (1470-1498), See also:king of See also:France, was the only son of See also:Louis XI. During the whole of his childhood Charles lived far from his See also:father at the See also:chateau of See also:Amboise, which was throughout his See also:life his favourite See also:residence. On the See also:death of Louis XI. in 1483 Charles, a lad of thirteen, was of See also:age, but was absolutely incapable of governing. Until 1492 he abandoned the See also:government to his See also:sister See also:Anne of See also:Beaujeu. In 1491 he married Anne, duchess of See also:Brittany, who was already betrothed to See also:Maximilian of See also:Austria. Urged by his favourite, See also:Etienne de Vesc, he then, at the age of twenty-two, threw off the yoke of the Beaujeus, and at the same See also:time discarded their See also:wise and able policy. But he was a thoroughly worthless See also:man with a weak and See also:ill-balanced See also:intellect. He had a romantic See also:imagination and conceived vast projects. He proposed at first to claim the rights of the See also:house of See also:Anjou, to which Louis XI. had succeeded, on the See also:kingdom of See also:Naples, and to use this as a stepping-See also:stone to the See also:capture of See also:Constantinople from the See also:Turks and his own See also:coronation as See also:emperor of the See also:East. He sacrificed everything to this adventurous policy, signed disastrous See also:treaties to keep his hands See also:free, and set out for See also:Italy in 1494. The ceremonial See also:side of the expedition being in his eyes the most important, he allowed himself to be intoxicated by his easy See also:triumph and duped by the Italians.

On the 12th of May 1495 he entered Naples in See also:

great pomp, clothed in the imperial insignia. A See also:general See also:coalition was, however, formed against him, and he was forced to return precipitately to France. It cannot be denied that he showed bravery at the See also:battle of Fornovo (the 5th of See also:July 1495). He was preparing a fresh expedition to Italy, when he died on the 8th of See also:April 1498, from the results of an See also:accident, at the chateau of Amboise.
