He graduated from See also:Franklin See also:College (University of Georgia) in 1834, and two years later was admitted to the See also:bar. From 1837 to 1840 he was See also:solicitor-See also:general for the western See also:circuit of his See also:state; from 1843 to 1851 and from 1855 to 1857 he was a member of the See also:National See also:House of Representatives, becoming Democratic leader in that See also:body in 1847, and serving as See also:speaker in 1849–1851; from 1851 to 1853 he was See also:governor of his state; and from See also:March 1857 to See also:December 186o he was secretary of the See also:treasury in See also:President See also:Buchanan's See also:cabinet. He was president of the See also:convention of the seceded states which drafted a constitution for the Confederacy. In 1861 he was appointed See also:colonel of a See also:regiment and two years later was made a See also:major-general. He died in New See also:York on the 9th of See also:October 1868. He sided with President See also:Jackson on the question of See also:nullification; was an efficient supporter of President See also:Polk's See also:administration during the Mexican See also:War; and was an ardent See also:advocate of See also:slavery See also:extension into the Territories, but when the See also:Compromise of 1850 had been agreed upon he became its staunch supporter as a See also:Union Democrat, and on that issue was elected governor of Georgia by a large See also:majority. In 186o, however, he ceased to be a Unionist, and became a leader of the See also:secession See also:movement. From the See also:close of the war until his See also:death he vigorously opposed the Reconstruction Acts.
