He was educated at See also:Saumur University and See also:Clare See also:College, See also:Cambridge, where he so distinguished himself in See also:mathematics that when only twenty-three years of See also:age he was chosen a See also:fellow of the Royal Society. He was elected one of the See also:council in 1716, and in 1723 See also:Sir See also:Isaac See also:Newton, See also:president of the society, appointed him one of the See also:vice-presidents. On the See also:death of Newton he became a See also:candidate for the See also:presidency, but was defeated by Sir Hans See also:Sloane, whom, however, he succeeded in 1741; in 1742 he was made a member of the See also:French See also:Academy; in 1746 he received honorary degrees from See also:Oxford and Cambridge. In 1733 he set out on a tour through See also:Italy, in the course of which he composed his See also:Dissertations on the Weights and Values of See also:Ancient Coins. Before the Society of Antiquaries, of which he was president from 1749 to 1754, he read in 1736 his Observations on the Trojan and Antonine Pillars at See also:Rome and his Table of English See also:Gold Coins from the r8th See also:Year of See also:King See also:Edward III. In 1745 he printed the latter with another on the See also:history of See also:silver coinage. He also contributed both to the Society of Antiquaries and to the Royal Society other papers, chiefly on See also:Roman antiquities. He mafried in 1714 See also:Lucretia See also:Bradshaw, an actress who had appeared at the Haymarket and See also:Drury See also:Lane (see See also:Nichols's Lit. Anecdot. ii. 578-598).
