Henry Gilder (1838–1900), the See also:Arctic explorer. He was educated at Bellevue See also:Seminary, an institution conducted by his See also:father, the Rev. William Henry Gilder (1812–1864), in See also:Flushing, See also:Long See also:Island. After three years (1865–1868) on the See also:Newark, New Jersey, Daily Advertiser, he founded, with See also:Newton See also:Crane, the Newark See also:Morning See also:Register. In 1869 he became editor of See also:Hours at See also:Home, and in 187o assistant editor of Scribner's Monthly (eleven years later re-named The See also:Century See also:Magazine), of which he became editor in 1881. He was one of the founders of the See also:Free See also:Art See also:League, of the See also:International See also:Copyright League, and of the Authors' See also:Club; was chairman of the New See also:York See also:Tenement See also:House See also:Commission in 1894; and was a prominent member of the See also:National See also:Institute of Arts and Letters, of the See also:Council of the National See also:Civil Service Reform League, and of the executive See also:committee of the Citizens' See also:Union Siaf New York See also:City. His poems, which are essentially lyrical, have been collected in various volumes, including Five Books of See also:Song (1894), In See also:Palestine and other Poems (1898), Poems and See also:Inscriptions(r9or), and In the Heights (1905). A See also:complete edition of his poems was published in 1908. He also edited " Sonnets from the Portuguese" and other Poems by See also:Elizabeth See also:Barrett See also:Browning; "One Word More"and other Poems by See also:Robert Browning (1905). He died in NewYork on the 18th of See also:November 'Iwo. His wife, See also:Helena de See also:Kay, a See also:grand-daughter of See also:Joseph Rodman See also:Drake, assisted, with See also:Saint Gaudens and others, in See also:founding the Society of American Artists, now merged in the National See also:Academy, and the Art Students' League of New York. She translated Sensier's See also:biography of See also:Millet, and painted, before her See also:marriage in 1874, studies in See also:flowers and ideal heads, much admired for their feeling and delicate colouring.
