LAUDER , a royal and See also:

police See also:burgh of See also:Berwickshire, See also:Scotland. Pop. (1901) 719. It is situated on the See also:Leader, 29 M. S.E. of See also:Edinburgh by the See also:North See also:British railway's See also:branch See also:line from Fountainhall, of which it is the See also:terminus. The burgh is said to date from the reign of See also:William the See also:Lion (1165–1214); its See also:charter was granted in 1502. In 1482 See also:James III. with his See also:court and See also:army rested here on the way to raise the See also:siege of See also:Berwick. While the nobles were in the See also:church considering grievances, See also:Robert Cochrane,recently created See also:earl of See also:Mar, one of the See also:king's favourites, whose " removal " was at the very moment under discussion, demanded admittance. See also:Archibald See also:Douglas, earl of See also:Angus, opened the See also:door and seized Mar, who was forthwith dragged to Lauder See also:Bridge and there, along with six other See also:obnoxious favourites, hanged in sight of his royal See also:master. It was in connexion with this exploit that Angus acquired the See also:nickname of " See also:Bell-the-See also:cat." The public buildings include a See also:town-See also:hall and a library. The See also:parish church was built in 1673 by the earl of See also:Lauderdale, in See also:exchange for the older edifice, the site of which was required for the enlargement of Thirlestane See also:castle, which, originally a fortress, was then remodelled for a See also:residence. The town is a favourite with anglers.
