MUSSOORIE, or MASURI , a See also:town and sanitarium of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Dehra Dun See also:district of the See also:United Provinces, about 6600 ft. above the See also:sea. Pop. (1901), 6461, rising to 15,000 in the hot See also:season. It stands on a See also:ridge of one of the See also:lower Himalayan ranges, amid beautiful See also:mountain scenery, and forms with Naini Tal the See also:chief summer resort for See also:European residents in the plains of the United Provinces. The view from Mussoorie over the valley of the Dun and across the Siwalik hills to the plains is very beautiful, as also is the view towards the See also:north, which is bounded by the peaks of the snowy range. Mussoorie practically forms one station with Landaur, the convalescent See also:depot for European troops, 7362 ft. above the sea. Some distance off, on the road to See also:Simla, is the See also:cantonment of See also:Chakrata, 7300 ft. It was formerly approached by road from See also:Saharanpur in the plains, 58 m. distant, but in 1900 the railway was opened to Dehra, 21 M. by road. There are numerous See also:schools for Europeans, including St See also:George's See also:college, the Philander-See also:Smith See also:institute, the See also:Oak See also:Grove school of the See also:East See also:Indian railway, and several See also:Church of See also:England and See also:Roman See also:Catholic institutions, together with a See also:cathedral of the latter faith. The first brewery in India was established here in 185o. The town has botanical gardens, and is, the summer headquarters of the Trigonometrical Survey.
