RENTON , a manufacturing See also:

town of See also:Dumbartonshire' See also:Scotland. Pop. (19o1) 5067. It is situated on the See also:Leven, 2 in. N.N.W. of See also:Dumbarton by the See also:North See also:British and Caledonian See also:railways. The leading See also:industry is See also:Turkey red See also:dyeing, and See also:calico-See also:printing and See also:bleaching are also carried on. A See also:parish See also:church stands on the site of Dalquhurn See also:House, the birthplace of Tobias See also:Smollett the novelist, to whose memory a Tuscan See also:column was erected in 1774, the inscription for which was revised by Dr See also:Johnson when he visited Bonhill in that See also:year with See also:Boswell. The town was founded in 1782 by Mrs Smollett—previously Mrs Telferof Bonhill (See also:sister of Tobias Smollett), who resumed her See also:maiden name when she succeeded to the Smollett estates; it was named after See also:Cecilia Renton, daughter of See also:John Renton of Blackadder, who had married Mrs Smollett's son, See also:Alexander Telfer.
