ROTTWEIL , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg, lying on a See also:hill on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Neckar, 46 m. S.W. of See also:Tubingen by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 9008. It is partly surrounded by walls, and contains two See also:fine churches, the See also:Gothic Heilige-Kreuz-kirche, built in the 14th See also:century and restored in 184o, and the Capellen-kirche with a Gothic See also:spire 230 ft. high. It has a See also:medieval town See also:hall, several See also:schools and a museum of antiquities. Especially noteworthy is the collection of sculptures and pictures of old See also:German See also:art in the See also:chapel of St See also:Lawrence, where there is also a See also:Roman See also:mosaic, found in the vicinity, portraying See also:Orpheus in the centre and, at the sides, Roman See also:chariot-races and See also:gladiators. The See also:industries of the See also:place embrace the manufacture of See also:powder, locomotives, machinery, See also:cotton, See also:leather and See also:beer. There is also a considerable See also:trade in live stock, agricu)tural produce and See also:wine. Rottweil-Altstadt, which lies about 1 m. to the See also:south, was a Roman See also:colony. It has an old See also:church and a Cistercian nunnery founded in 1221 and dissolved in 1838. Near the town is Wilhelmshall, with saline springs.

In the 13th century Rottweil became a See also:

free imperial See also:city and was subsequently the seat of an imperial See also:court of See also:law, the See also:jurisdiction of which extended over See also:Swabia, the Rhineland and See also:Alsace. The functions of this tribunal came to an end in 1784. In 1803 Rottweil passed into the See also:possession of Wurttemberg.
