After several winters' schooling in his native See also:town, he entered the counting-See also:house of See also:William See also:Gray & Son in See also:Boston. In 1809 he began business on his own See also:account, but failed during the See also:War of 1812 and again became associated with the Grays, then the largest shipowners in See also:America, by whom a few years later he was sent to See also:London in See also:charge of their See also:European business. There he came into relations with the Barings, and in 1826 formed a See also:partnership with See also:John, a son of See also:Sir See also:Thomas See also:Baring. Two years later both partners were admitted to the See also:firm of Baring See also:Brothers & See also:Company, of which Bates eventually became See also:senior partner, occupying in consequence an influential position in the See also:British See also:financial See also:world. In 1853-1854 he acted with rare impartiality and See also:justice as See also:umpire of the See also:international See also:commission appointed to See also:settle claims growing out of the War of 1812. In 1852-1855 he contributed $1oo,000 in books and in See also:cash for, a public library in Boston, the See also:money to be invested and the See also:annual income to be applied to the See also:purchase of books. Upon his See also:death the " upper See also:hall," or See also:main reference-See also:room (opened in 1861) in the See also:building erected in 1858 by the See also:order of the library trustees, was named Bates Hall; and upon the opening of the new building in 1895 this name was transferred to its See also:principal See also:reading-room, one of the finest library halls in the world. During the See also:Civil War Bates's sympathies were strongly with the See also:Union, and besides aiding the See also:United States See also:government fiscal agents in various ways, he used his See also:influence to prevent the raising of loans for the Confederacy.
