TAYLOR (1839- ) , See also:Canadian soldier and publicist, was See also:born in See also:Toronto on the 31st of See also:August 1839. In 1861 he was called to the See also:bar, and was from 1865-1867 a member of the See also:city See also:council. From the first he took a prominent See also:part in the organization of the military forces of See also:Canada, becoming a See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel in the active See also:militia in 1866. He saw active service during the Fenian See also:raid of 1866, and during the See also:rebellion of 1885. Owing to his dissatisfaction with the conduct of the Conservative See also:ministry during the Red See also:River Rebellion in 1869-7o, he abandoned that party, and in 1872 unsuccessfully contested Algoma in the Liberal See also:interest. Thereafter he remained See also:free from party ties. In 1877 he was appointed See also:police See also:magistrate of Toronto. Colonel Denison was one of the founders of the " Canada First " party, which did much to shape the See also:national aspirations from 187o to 1878, and was a consistent supporter of imperial federation and of preferential See also:trade between See also:Great See also:Britain and her colonies. He became a member of the Royal Society of Canada, and was See also:president of the See also:section dealing with See also:English See also:history and 'literature. The best known of his military See also:works is his History of See also:Modern See also:Cavalry (See also:London, 1877), which was awarded first See also:prize by the See also:Russian See also:government in an open competition and has been translated into See also:German, Russian and See also:Japanese. In 1900 he published his reminiscences under the See also:title of Soldiering in Canada.
