A See also:canon of Bourges, in 1402 he became treasurer to See also:John, See also:duke of Berri, and in 1406 See also:bishop of See also:Chartres. He was arrested by John the Fearless, duke of See also:Burgundy, with the hapless See also:Jean de Montaigu (1349–1409) in 1409, but was soon released and then banished. Attaching himself to the dauphin See also:Louis, duke of See also:Guienne, he became his chancellor, the See also:king's See also:ambassador in See also:Brittany, and a member of the See also:grand See also:council; and on the 13th of May 1415, he was transferred from the see of Chartres to that of Clermont-See also:Ferrand. In May 1418, when the Burgundians re-entered See also:Paris, he only escaped See also:death at their hands by taking See also:refuge in the See also:Bastille. He then See also:left Paris, but only to fall into the hands of his enemy, the duke de la Tremoille, who imprisoned him in the See also:castle of See also:Sully. Rescued by the dauphin See also:Charles, he was appointed chancellor of See also:France on the 3rd of See also:February 1422. He endeavoured to reconcile Burgundy and France, was a party to the selection of See also:Arthur, See also:earl of See also:Richmond, as See also:constable, but had to resign his chancellorship in favour of See also:Regnault of Chartres; first from See also:March 25th to See also:August 6th 1425, and again when La Tremoille had supplanted Richmond. After the fall of La Tremoille in 1433 he returned to See also:court, and exercised a powerful See also:influence over affairs of See also:state almost till his death, which took See also:place at the castle of See also:Beaulieu (See also:Puy-de-D6me) on the 25th or 26th of See also:November 1444.
