Returning to See also:Germany in 1855 he was See also:professor of See also:history successively at the universities of See also:Rostock, See also:Tubingen (which he See also:left in 1866 because of his See also:political views), See also:Marburg and See also:Gottingen. He retained his See also:chair at Gottingen until his See also:death at See also:Bremen on the 3rd of See also:June 1882. He was a careful and industrious student of the See also:English records, and his writings are almost wholly devoted to English history. His first See also:work, See also:Konig Aelfred and See also:seine Stellung in der Geschichte Englands (Berlin, 1851), was followed by monographs on Bischof See also:Grosseteste and See also:Adam von See also:Marsh (Tubingen, 1864), and on See also:Simon von See also:Montfort (Tubingen, 1867). He continued J. M. See also:Lappenberg's Geschichte von England from 1154 to 1509 (See also:Gotha, 1853-1858), and himself wrote a Geschichte Englands (See also:Leipzig, 1864-1875), dealing with the See also:period between 1814 and 1852. Two volumes of See also:historical essays, Bilder aus Alt-England (Gotha, 186o and 1876), and Aufsatze zur englischen Geschichte (Leipzig, 1869 and 1883), and numerous historical articles in German See also:periodicals came from his See also:pen; and he edited several of the English chroniclers for the Monumenta Germaniae historica.
