ROSCREA , a See also:

market See also:town near the See also:north-western border of Co. See also:Tipperary, See also:Ireland, pleasantly situated on undulating ground connecting the See also:Devil's See also:Bit and the Slieve See also:Bloom mountains. Pop. (1901) 2325. It is 77 M. W.S.W. from See also:Dublin on the Ballybrophy and See also:Limerick See also:branch of the See also:Great See also:Southern & Western railway. A branch See also:line runs northward to See also:Birr or Parsonstown. See also:Flour-milling and tanning are See also:industries, and monthly See also:cattle fairs are held. There is a branch here of the Trappist Monastery of See also:Mount Melleray in Co. See also:Waterford. The antiquarian remains are of See also:interest. These include portions of an Augustinian See also:abbey, founded by St Cronan, See also:early in the 7th See also:century, which are incorporated into the See also:church.

Out of this abbey a See also:

diocese See also:grew, to be See also:united with that of See also:Killaloe in the 12th century. Here also was produced the See also:Book of Dimma, consisting of the gospels and accompanied by a brazen See also:shrine, ornamented with See also:silver and See also:tracery, and preserved in the library of Trinity See also:College, Dublin. A See also:cross and a shrine of St Cronan are in the See also:churchyard. There are also a See also:round See also:tower, 8o ft. in height, but lacking the upper storeys, and a Franciscan friary (1490); while a circular tower, and a square keep (occupied as See also:barracks), See also:mark strongholds, the one built by See also:King See also:John and the other by the Ormondes, and testify to the former importance of the town, which was doubtless accentuated by its See also:physical position in a passway between the neighbouring See also:mountain ranges. Leap See also:Castle, about 4 M. N., is another fortified See also:mansion, which is still inhabited.
