SAVINGS See also:BANKS (Fr. caisses d'epargne; Ger. Sparkassen) , institutions for the purpose of receiving small deposits of See also:money and investing them for the benefit of the depositors at See also:compound See also:interest. They originated in the latter See also:part of the 18th See also:century-a See also:period marked by a See also:great advance in the organization of provident habits in See also:general (see FRIENDLY See also:SOCIETIES). They seem, however, to have been first suggested by See also:Daniel See also:Defoe in 1697. The earliest institution of the See also:kind in See also:Europe was one established at See also:Brunswick in 1765; it was followed in 1778 by that of See also:Ham-See also:burg, which still exists, in 1786 by one at See also:Oldenburg, in 1790 by one at See also:Loire, in 1792 by that of See also:Basel, in 1794 by one at See also:Geneva, which had but a See also:short existence, and in 1796 by one at See also:Kiel in See also:Holstein.
