Hill and See also:Block Island. Its See also:harbour is excellent, and it is a See also:port of entry, but its foreign See also:trade is unimportant. The township covers an See also:area of about 45 sq. in., and includes, besides the borough of Stonington, the villages of Mystic, Old Mystic and Pawcatuck (which is closely allied with Westerly, Rhode Island). Among the manufactures of the township are foundry and See also:machine-See also:shop products, See also:printing presses, See also:silk machinery, fertilizers, spools, See also:- THREAD (0. After its See also:settlement in 1649 and the years immediately succeeding by See also:English planters from Rehoboth in See also:Plymouth See also:Colony (to whom a See also:monument was erected in 1889 in Wequetequock Burying Ground), the territory now included in Stonington See also:town-ship was first a See also:part of New London township, and then (1658), in accordance with a boundary decision of the See also:United Colonies of New See also:England, a part (under the name of Southertown) of See also:Suffolk county, See also:Massachusetts, finally reverting to Connecticut in accordance with the new boundaries fixed by the Connecticut royal See also:charter in 1662. In 1664 it gained See also:representation in the See also:General See also:Court of Connecticut; in '665 the name was changed to Mystic, and in '666 to Stonington. In the '8th See also:century the See also:village (now the borough) of Stonington (settled in 1752) See also:developed a brisk trade with See also:Boston, Plymouth and the See also:West Indies. Whaling and sealing were for many years important industries and a whaling See also:captain of Stonington, Nathaniel B. See also:Palmer, See also:early in the 19th century, discovered Palmer See also:Land in the See also:Antarctic. The village was the seat of military stores during the See also:War of See also:Independence, and was bombarded by a See also:British See also:frigate in See also:August 1775.
