After trying the See also:merchant service, See also:medicine, See also:sheep-farming in the See also:Falkland Isles, and See also:tea-planting in See also:Bengal, in 1867 he took to the See also:stage, for which his handsome presence, See also:fine See also:voice and gallant bearing eminently fitted him. His first See also:appearance in London was as See also:Lord Cloudrays in See also:Robertson's Society, at the old See also:Prince of See also:Wales's See also:theatre. He quickly came into fawur in " See also:hero " parts, and appeared at the See also:principal London theatres from 1868 onwards. In 188o he joined See also:Irving's See also:company at the See also:Lyceum, playing such parts as Cassio and Mercutio, and in 1885 he acted there with See also:Mary See also:Anderson, as Romeo to her Juliet, &c. He was then engaged to take the leading parts in Adelphi See also:melodrama, and it was in this capacity that for the See also:rest of his career he was best known, though he occasionally acted elsewhere, notably with Irving at the Lyceum. His last appearance was in See also:Secret Service. On the 16th of See also:December 1897, as he was entering the Adelphi theatre, he was stabbed to See also:death by a madman, See also:Richard See also:Arthur Prince. Terriss married See also:Miss See also:Isabel See also:Lewis, and his daughter Ellaline Terriss (Mrs See also:Seymour See also:Hicks) became a well-known actress in musical See also:comedy, in association with her See also:husband See also:Edward Seymour Hicks (b. 1871), proprietor of the Aldwych and Hicks theatres in London.
